The are a couple of good news aggregators in Minnesota — MinnPost’s Daily Glean and Bring Me The News come to mind — but today there is so much happening out there connected to lung health, I just had to create my own news roundup.

On the tobacco front, a proposal to increase Minnesota’s cigarette taxes is making headlines, but there is more. The Roseville city council gave tobacco a split decision, voting to ban hookah bars and tobacco shop “sample rooms,” but giving the green light to candy tobacco products and those absurd e-cigarettes. Cottage Grove is going to continue to allow smoking in its parks. Really, Cottage Grove?

More sad proof that asthma can be deadly. A famed foriegn correspondent has died in Syria of an apparent asthma attack.

I was quoted in a Midwest Energy News story on E85 yesterday. I was talking about the same topic with Bill Hudson on WCCO-TV earlier in the week. Today’s Strib has a good story on how an air pollution violation by a Silver Bay taconite plant might lead to better air quality monitors statewide.

Can electric vehicles work in a state like Minnesota, where the summers can be sweltering, and the winters long and cold? Who would buy a vehicle that needs to be plugged in, and are they really better for the environment than traditional vehicles? These questions and more will be address at a free workshop hosted by the American Lung Association in Minnesota.

Forget the flashy prototypes, concept vehicles, or “clean fuels of the future” that exist only in the laboratory or on the cover of Popular Mechanics – a free lecture offered by the American Lung Association in Minnesota focuses instead on alternative fuels and vehicles that are available here in Minnesota, right now.

The lecture will be held on Wednesday, July 20, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the Mississippi Room in the American Lung Association in Minnesota building at 490 Concordia Avenue in Saint Paul. The topic will be vehicles that can use cleaner fuels such as E85, biodiesel, propane or natural gas. It’s the second in the “Clean Air Choices” series of lectures focused on air pollution in our state.

“Vehicle emissions are the single largest source of air pollution in the state of Minnesota, but we are also a leader in cleaner alternative fuels and vehicles,” said Robert Moffitt, a spokesperson for the American Lung Association in Minnesota. “Unlike many other parts of the country, Minnesota drivers have choices they can make that can reduce air pollution and the harm it causes to our health. The purpose of this lecture is to explain what these choices are.”

American Lung Association hosts free lecture series on air pollution

ALAMN Hosts 'Clean Air Choices' Lecture Series

The American Lung Association in Minnesota is proud to announce “Clean Air Choices,” a new series of free public lectures on air pollution in our state. This series will examine the sources and causes of air pollution, its effect on human health and the environment, state and federal clean air laws intended to reduce air pollution and minimize its harmful effects.

The first lecture in the series is on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 and will be on the subject of “Air Pollution in Minnesota.” It will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. The featured speakers are Frank Kohlasch and Kristie Ellickson, PhD, of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Jean Johnson, PhD, of the Minnesota Department of Health.

The monthly Clean Air Choices lectures will be held from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the Mississippi Room in the American Lung Association in Minnesota building at 490 Concordia Avenue in Saint Paul. These lectures will feature presentations by American Lung Association staff and respected experts from a wide variety of fields and disciplines. The lectures will be brief and will include time for questions.

Other lectures in the series will include:

· “Fueling change: alternative fuels and vehicles available today” on Wednesday, July 20, 2011

· “Electric vehicles: Can they work in Minnesota?” on Wednesday, August 17, 2011
